The highly sought-after Rolex 1655 Explorer 2, or “Freccione”, was catapulted to instant fame when it was donned by Steve McQueen in The Great Escape. The prominent arrow-tipped, orange-rimmed 24 hour hand (in Italian, Freccia), was originally intended to serve the needs of speleologists: cave explorers who would spend extended periods undergound and in hazardous conditions, with no indication of day and night time.
